So i have had my KFX for 2 years, and initially i was not happy with it, luckily i had purchased a LRD pro4 series slip on exhaust, an LRD EFI controller, and Mod Quad K&N Filter kit which made me very satisfied with the bike.

Over the past few dune trips im realizing that im always looking for another gear. I thought about changing the gearing to help a little but im far to satisfied with the bottom end to sacrifice it. So im now in search of some other things besides new pistons, and cams and putting big bore kits and such in it, as i love the reliability in this bike.

This past dune trip my buddies had both purchased new quads, a yfz450R and an ltr450. The yfz450R is stock with the lid off and baffle taken out, and the ltr has a two bros pipe and cherry bomb. Now take into consideration i dont run sand tires but off the line was not the problem, right about the time i shift into 4th gear both bikes seemed to start to pull away after being pretty even, then by the time i hit 5th i was looking for another gear just to keep up. Literally by the time i gave up was about 2 bike lengths or so behind the ltr and maybe a bike length or so behind the yfz450R. Though that doesnt seem like its too far behind, when your behind your still behind. Im not in this to have the fastest of the three quads but i do want and need more. Im very excited that the new yfz450R runs that good, but im very dissapointed that my kfx cant keep up with a stock bike. As for the ltr well considering the cherry bomb supposably offers a 7 hp gain alone i was not surprised it was faster.

So what can i purchase to help out in the top end. I'm looking at purchasing the 40th anniversary full system exhaust from LRD to get rid of the slip on, and to offer more torque, other than that though im not sure what i can do to help out in overall hp and/or top end.

Sorry so long just want everyone to know my situation, any help would be appreciated, thanks guys.

There's plenty you can do to get more hp, really depends on how large your budget is.. Id replace the intake to start, the stock will limit the power no matter what other mods you make, check out the fci or fuelatv... new intake, exhaust and the efi controller will get you to the mid 40s and considerably more power, can also go with new cams and port n polish and you'll be real competitive.. You may want to tweak the gearing as well, generally I stick with stock front for the dunes.. You may want to note that the kfx will not have the highest top end speed so the others may pull ahead at the very top... hope this helps

Yeah it helps a little, as stated though i have the mod quad filter kit w/ K&N and for the money it significantly made a dif. If there was a huge hp gain like a dif. of 2-3 h.p. over the mod quad then maybe i could see spending the $300 for a fci but i don't see that happening. i have an LRD exhaust and LRD efi controller, and im sure im in the mid 40's but if i would have known a stock bike would be faster than my KFX i have put almost a grand into i would have bought the ladder of the two (YFZ450R), thats where my questions come into play, because ill be honest im not familiar with the efi by any means its pretty new to me so...

As far as cams go and a high comp. piston, well lets just say i can support some new parts but not rebuilding it twice a year. My yfz has a 13:1 and cams and its always broke down. As said i have had my KFX for 2 years and it has never been in the shop most reliable bike ive owned by far. I have been thinking of porting it but i guess in the case of the kfx you have to sacrifice some to gain some... i really dont want to lose my bottom end i love it. I guess im wondering what you guys are doing to your bikes to make them run because as good as i thought it was running it apparently is not as i quickly found out up against my buddies stock yfz450R the thing is a beast.

thank you for your input, i have been looking at the fci intake for awhile.

The modquad and k&n won't help enough, the stock intake is a disaster, if you didnt already you should pull it off and take a look at how tiny the intake is.. also you can create your own intake with a lt-r tube and save some $$s.. my stock dyno was 36.. with dasa, fci, kxcams (pciii) i'm at mid 49... pretty significant over stock... also a borrowed fuel map vs. a custom fuel map could give some nice gains as well.. these things should be custom mapped for optimal performance.

let me ask you this... did the kx cams do a lot for you? and if so we are talking about the dirt bike cams right? and what did they improve? i have been looking into them but honestly i dont want the reliability to diminish... im thinking about getting the fuel customs intake not for any reason over the fci, would that be a mistake? and how good is there air box fci or fuel customs, because i cant afford to get rid of an air box in the conditions i ride.
thanks

Just like Offroadhunter said, you need to lose the intake. If you are worried about air box, Fuel atv box version doesnt lose any HP. . Go to a full exhaust system, get a PC3 with a perfect map. Then lower the rear sprocket to 37. Should put you back up with atleast the ltr450. TO get with the yami, your going to have to go internal mods, Sorry.

Do a search for a post by "theduv" he made his own intake using the lt-r tube,, it will give good results and save you a bundle over purchasing a new intake (assuming you want to spend the least necessary)
